Sunil Choitram is head of a legal department and group compliance officer at Crescent Group, a privately owned group of companies headquartered in the UAE. Crescent has wide business interests spanning oil and gas, ports and logistics, healthcare, funds, PE, VC and beyond. Given the group’s diversified holdings, Sunil has a very wide practice, including corporate/commercial matters, finance, funds, disputes and regulatory advice across various industrial sectors. As a senior advisor to the shareholders and reporting to the C-suite, he brings with him a wealth of experience.

Prior to joining Crescent, he spent over a decade advising lenders and sponsors on complex project finance transactions at Clifford Chance LLP, one of the largest lawfirms in the world. Originally trained and based in London, he went on to work in the Frankfurt and Abu Dhabi offices before settling in Dubai. Over the course of 2008/2009, he relocated to Mumbai, India, where he forged alliances between Clifford Chance and AZB, the leading lawfirm in India, and advised Reliance Industries on oil and gas matters and more than a billion dollars of corporate joint ventures. In 2010 he was in-house counsel to Al Waha Capital, a boutique investment firm in Abu Dhabi. After several years in Abu Dhabi, he left private practice in 2014 to join Crescent.

  • $500 Million+ multi lateral financing for a gas expansion project in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
  • The issuance of $350m of capital markets instruments.
  • $1 Billion insurance coverage matters.
  • Force majeure and HSSE matters arising from armed attacks on a gas plant.
  • The development of next-gen endovascular robotics and steerable guidewires and the world’s first remote robot thrombectomy.
  • Gulftainer assets and United States CFIUUS clearances.
  • Litigation to recover $300m extracted by fraud and the negotiation and disposal of related assets including an art collection, real estate and a yacht.
  • Development of a compliance programme and the delivery of training across UAE and Iraq. 
  • The enforcement of arbitral awards totalling $2.4 Billion.
  • A $26.5 Billion dispute with the Kurdistan Regional Government.
  • A multi billion dollar dispute with National Iranian Oil Company and related enforcement activities.
  • High Hopes Pediatric Clinic across a variety of matters pro bono.
